About the Mesick Area...
Mesick, named after the first family that settled in the area, is located at the crossroads of M-115 and M-37, twenty minutes from Cadillac, Frankfort, and Traverse City.
Mesick and the surrounding communities border the Manistee River. Because of this large river and the vast hardwood forests, Mesick grew into a lumbering town in the mid 1800's. Soon the railway came into town bringing more people to the area. When the timbers receded, farms began to develop. During the Great Depression, the Hodenplye Hydro-Electric Dam was constructed to the southwest of Mesick, creating a beautiful lake that brought vacationers and sportsman to the area. In the 1960's, forestry - especially Christmas Tree farms - became a major part of the area. Today, the small, rural area is home to many vacationers and seasonal homes. The area has many lakes and vast State forest lands - perfect for those looking to hunt, fish, camp, snowmobile, and hike while on vacation! Village of Mesick Traditions:
About the Mesick Band Program...The Mesick Bulldog Bands have been around since the consolidation of the area village schools in the early 1960's (Boon, Copemish, Harrietta, Mesick, Sherman, and Yuma). The band program has been a strong tradition for the Mesick Consolidated School district and the community - which has earned the Bands its motto: "The Pride of Mesick High!" Even though our school is a small, rural district, it offers a great program where students learn the fundamentals of Marching band, Concert band, and Pep band. The groups continually receive top ratings at district and state Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) performances. We are proud that the Band Program has strong support from the school district and the community!
